the unexpected visit

dressed in the apple-green

and denim sex,

i will not allow myself to break.

the mantra, spoken under a shaky exhale.

i flip-flop down onto the asphalt

where the story is told.

sitting at the table,

at the only joint in town that still has power

(after a rainstorm of end-of-the-world proportions)

i can only smile stiffly,

stare at entwined fingers,

and take a sip of the alcohol-infused limejuice

distraction comes in the simplest of forms:

being wrapped up in a blanket,

refusing to turn off the airconditioner

and laughing at a flickering screen

but even the beauty of sleep

could not prevent

the gravity of what could have been

causing tears

that i weakly attempt to deny

a delayed reaction:

i could have lost you forever
