lips stained merlot
instead of flushed and swollen
the one thing i'm good for
and i can't put it to use

eyelids feeling strained
the heat of focus
the promise of fridays
distracted by recognition

faulty breath
shaky words
i'm pale and grey
yet they believe i'm color and sunlight

lies fed carbohydrates
push off the urge
to be gone
to lose it all

tonight would have been a night
that i'd sing for love
or stolen a kiss of recognition

instead i live week to month
stealing moments that should be persistent
